Ladies and Gentlemen, the beautiful Rosemary Kennedy...
An example of when people living in the Herd OS tried to reign in someone they deemed that needed to be saved is this one. It was not often talked about, especially in its day, but today we have evolved enough as a society to be able to begin to see the gifts.
Rosemary Kennedy was the oldest daughter of Joe and Rose Kennedy. Her brothers were President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert and Ted Kennedy. Rosie, as she was called, was sent at the age of 15 to the Sacred Heart Convent in Providence, Rhode Island where she was taught separately from the other students by a special team of instructors. Her reading, writing and math skills were reported to be at a fourth grade level, although Rosie studied hard. She felt like a huge disappointment to her parents whom she desperately wanted to please.
Although her IQ level was tested at falling between 60–70, her diaries in the late 1930s reveal a beautiful and engaging young woman whose life was filled with a full and jaw-dropping social calendar that included tea dances, going to the opera, dress fittings and meetings with incredible people including President Roosevelt, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Below are some excerpts directly from her diary, which was only finally published in the 1980s:
“Went to luncheon in the ballroom in the White House. James Roosevelt took us to see his father, President Roosevelt. He said, “It’s about time you came. How can I put my arm around all of you? Which is the oldest? You are all so big.”
“Up too late for breakfast. Had it on the deck. Played Ping-Pong with Ralph’s sister, also with another man. Had lunch at 1:15. Walked with Peggy. Also went to horse races with her, and bet and won a dollar and a half. Went to the English Movie at five. Had dinner at 8:45. Went to the lounge with Miss Cahill and Eunice [her beloved younger sister] and retired early.”
Her father, Joe Kennedy, a very driven man, wanted all his children to be successful. He had very focused goals, and he went through extraordinary circumstances to make sure his family was exceptional. As Rosie hit her late teens and early twenties, she started acting in a way that was against the mission her father saw for her. She was fighting against membership in the Herd OS. Now we know that she was most likely dyslexic with perhaps some mild mental retardation, but mostly just a young girl who was part of a very demanding family and was trying to find herself in the midst of going through the hormonal stages of puberty. There was a huge fear that people would find out. It was under these conditions that Rosemary became a big family secret.
Unbeknownst to her mother, Rose, her father Joe Kennedy, in order to “fix” her behavior and lack of mental ability, took their 23-year-old daughter to get a prefrontal lobotomy. It was one of the very first lobotomies ever given.
